In April 2022 a bare space of ground where a church hall once stood has been transformed into a Community Garden by the combined efforts of Sustainable Taranaki, St Mary’s Anglican Church, Enviroschools and members of the community.

This is not just a site to grow vegetables but also a platform for an education space, to build friendships and to pass on skills.

Hawera High School and Tawhiti School have been involved wth the planning and site preparation and now the planting and harvesting .  Bunnings Warehouse generously supplied the timber and the building support for planters and the fence, Pak’n’Save gave some former produce bins to be repurposed as raised planters.

Our planting for Puanga took place on 1 July with plants donated by local members of the community and Garden Edge and the Warehouse.

There are regular working Bees – usually 1-3pm on First Friday and second Sunday of the month but feel free to come down and  check out the “To Do” list for jobs.  Planning meetings and Workshops happen regulary.  Most recently a Compost workshop and Worm farming Workshop.

A Kai Cupboard built by students from Patea Area School and assisted by Brian Manutai from Manu Building Ltd is now on site and will have produce put there on Harvest days.  This is for the community to add to and take from as needed.
