Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent.

In the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches traditionally this is the day when the imposition of ashes occurs (flax crosses from the previous Palm Sunday are turned into ashes and mixed with oil and used to mark a cross on believer’s foreheads).
